What custom software development actually means

Custom software development is building an application designed for one organisation rather than adapting a packaged product sold to everyone in an industry. The difference is not cosmetic. Off-the-shelf software asks you to change how you work; custom software changes to fit how you already work.

The case for building custom usually comes down to one thing: your competitive advantage lives in a process that no packaged product models correctly. If your pricing logic, your approval chain or your compliance obligation is genuinely unusual, a generic tool will flatten it. If a standard product already covers 90% of what you need, buy it — you will save 80% of the money and six months of time.

That judgement is the first thing we do on a scoping call, and we will tell you to buy rather than build if that is the honest answer. We have been doing this since 2017, across 500+ projects in 40+ countries, which is where the judgement comes from.

What we build

Six categories cover most of what companies come to us for. If yours is not here, it is probably still something we have built before.

SaaS platforms

Multi-tenant products with subscription billing, role-based access, admin panels and the metering you need before you have customers to meter.

Internal business systems

ERP, CRM, WMS, HR portals and workflow tools that replace the spreadsheet-and-email setup nobody admits to still running.

Web applications

Customer portals, dashboards and operations consoles that stay fast under real load and real users.

Mobile applications

iOS and Android apps, cross-platform where it makes sense and native where performance or hardware access demands it.

APIs and integrations

REST or GraphQL services, plus the unglamorous work of connecting the ERP, payments, CRM and legacy systems you already run on.

AI and automation

Retrieval-augmented assistants, document extraction, forecasting and workflow automation — scoped to a measurable business outcome, not a demo.

What does custom software cost?

Real numbers rather than a calculator that emails you a marketing sequence.

Indicative cost ranges for custom software projects delivered from India compared with US and European agencies
Project typeDEV SEC ITUS / EU agency
Web application$12k - $35k$70k - $180k
Production MVP$18k - $45k$90k - $250k
Full SaaS platform$45k - $120k$180k - $500k
Enterprise system$60k - $200k$250k - $600k
Native mobile app$25k - $90k$100k - $300k
Team of 4 engineers$9k / month$40k+ / month

Indicative ranges for 2025, USD. Final price depends on integration count, compliance requirements and whether you need native mobile. Every engagement is quoted as a single fixed number after scoping.

What moves the price up

More third-party integrations, compliance scope (HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI-DSS), native mobile on two platforms, and legacy data migration.

What moves the price down

An existing internal tool you are replacing, a clear scope frozen before we start, and choosing one platform over two.

How we keep it fixed

Written scope, written milestones, one price. Changes mid-build are re-quoted in writing and you decide whether they are worth it.

How the engagement works

Six steps, roughly three months from first call to production.

  1. 01

    Scoping call

Thirty minutes with a senior engineer. We go through the problem, the users, the systems you need to talk to and the deadline. You get our honest read on fit, in writing, whether or not you hire us.

  2. 02

    Fixed-price proposal

Within three working days you receive scope, deliverables, a week-by-week timeline, milestone payments and a single fixed price. No hourly estimate, no range that doubles in month three.

  3. 03

    Architecture and design

Senior engineers produce the data model, API contracts, wireframes and a technical specification. You approve this before any build work starts, because changing direction here is cheap and changing it later is not.

  4. 04

    Two-week build sprints

A working, clickable build every two weeks. Not a status report, not a slide. Feedback lands directly in the next sprint backlog and you can see the real thing running.

  5. 05

    Security review and QA

OWASP-aligned code review, dependency and secret scanning, full regression QA, and penetration testing on anything that touches money or personal data.

  6. 06

    Launch and handover

We deploy to your cloud or ours, hand over documentation and the full repository, then stay on for twelve months of bug fixes, patches and small changes.

Why teams pick us

Six commitments that show up in the contract, not just the pitch.

Senior engineers only

The people in your scoping call are the people writing your code. No junior overflow, no rotating bench.

Fixed price, not time and materials

We absorb the overrun. If the project takes longer, that is our problem to manage, not your budget to fund.

Security in the pipeline

OWASP review on every merge and DevSecOps in CI. The vulnerability gets found by us, not by someone else.

You own everything

Source code, schemas and documentation transfer to you on final payment. No licence, no dependency, no hostage situation.

Ship in 8 to 12 weeks

Not a discovery phase that eats a quarter. You see working software in the first sprint.

Ongoing support included

Twelve months post-launch cover on every project, then a retainer if you want us to keep going.

Custom software development questions

What is custom software development?

Custom software development is the process of designing, building and maintaining software specifically for one organisation, as opposed to adapting a generic off-the-shelf product. It is worth it when your business runs on rules that no packaged product supports — a proprietary pricing model, an unusual regulatory requirement, a workflow unique to your industry. It is not worth it when a standard tool already does 90% of what you need for 5% of the cost. We will tell you which side of that line you are on during scoping.

How much does custom software development cost?

In India, a production MVP typically costs $18,000 to $45,000. A full enterprise platform with third-party integrations runs $60,000 to $200,000. A focused web application starts around $12,000. For comparison, the same scope at a US or European agency is typically $150,000 to $600,000. The variables that move the number most are integration count, compliance requirements, and whether you need native mobile. We quote a fixed price after a free scoping call rather than publishing a range that doubles later.

How long does custom software take to build?

A production MVP takes 8 to 12 weeks from kickoff to launch. A full SaaS or enterprise system takes 16 to 24 weeks. Projects with data migration, compliance review or multi-market rollout run longer. You get a working demo at the end of every two-week sprint, so you are never waiting months to see progress.

What is the difference between custom and off-the-shelf software?

Off-the-shelf software is built for the average company in an industry. You adapt your business to fit it. Custom software is built around how your business already works. Buy off-the-shelf when you want to start fast and the standard fit is good enough. Build custom when your competitive advantage lives in the workflow itself, and a generic tool would flatten it.

Which technologies do you build on?

For web we use React, Next.js and TypeScript on the front end with Node.js, Python or Go on the back end. Data lives in PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB. Mobile is Flutter or React Native, with native Swift and Kotlin when performance demands it. Infrastructure runs on AWS, Azure or GCP with Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD. We will recommend the stack that fits your problem rather than the one we are most excited about.

Do you work with our existing development team?

Often, yes. Many clients engage us to fill a specific gap — a security engineer, an architect, a mobile specialist — while their own team runs the rest. We work in your repository, follow your branching strategy and join your standups. We also take full ownership if you would rather hand the project over entirely.

How do you keep the project on budget?

Everything is fixed-price against written milestones. You approve a detailed scope before we start, and the price does not change when the work takes longer — that is our risk, not yours. If you want changes mid-build, we re-quote them in writing and you decide whether they are worth it. There are no surprise invoices.

Do you sign an NDA and transfer ownership of the code?

Yes to both. We sign a mutual NDA before any project detail is discussed, and we accept your own template if you have one. On final payment, all source code, designs, database schemas and API documentation transfer to you in full. We retain no ownership and no licence.

What happens after launch?

Every project includes 12 months of support covering bug fixes, security patches and minor adjustments. Beyond that most clients move to a monthly retainer for ongoing development and maintenance. You are never left with a system nobody wants to touch.

How do you handle security and compliance?

Security is built in rather than bolted on. Every merge gets an OWASP-aligned code review, dependencies are scanned automatically, and critical modules are penetration tested before release. We have delivered projects against GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2 and PCI-DSS requirements, and we will tell you up front if your idea is not achievable within the compliance envelope.
